Five Really Cool Walking Experiences
Each of the following walking experiences features astounding history, incredible architecture, fascinating visual atmospheres and wonderful places to shop and dine along the way. The walks are relatively condensed, meaning you can see a lot within a limited amount of walking. They are also on basically level ground making the experience are not only fun, but an easy stroll for most persons.
Historic Philadelphia – Walk in the footsteps of America’s found fathers through Independence National Historic Park and the surrounding area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is a delightful walking area that includes trees shaded parks, cozy historic streets and a periphery of small streets with colorful shops and wonderful places to get a bite to eat and a cool drink.
New Orleans French Quarter – There is always something happening in this colorful area to keep you entertained. The many street entertainers, with their wonderful jazz and blues music are alone enough to justify taking this walk. Add to this seeing the incredible and unique buildings and homes in their French and Spanish styles with their fancy ironwork and colors. The fragrant magnolia trees, the smells of peppery Cajun foods being prepared and the aromas chicory coffee and sweet beignets capture your senses. Enjoy some of the finest dining in America and you can’t beat the Crescent City for walking. And don’t forget to stop at a Voodoo shop to pick up a little gris-gris.
Rome, Italy – The Eternal City is excellent for walking. The main part of the city is not that large in area and it brims in visual delights. You’ll walk by such ancient sites as the Spanish Steps, the romantic Trevi Fountain, Capitol Hill, Saint Peter’s Cathedral, and the perfectly designed Pantheon. Enjoy beautiful squares including Plazza Navona with it delightful fountains, Piazza Venezia and the outdoor market at Campo de Floria. Rome is particular beautiful to walk in the evening as the lighting magically turns the city into a wonderland.
Hollywood, California – Follow the stars in the walkways to explore where the movie industry began and flourished. Walk where the early tycoons and legendary stars worked lived and played. The most popular restaurant frequented by the early movie is still there and you might be lucky enough to sit in the corner window booth that was always reserved for Charlie Chaplin. Walk through the arches, like the current stars do, into the theater that hosts the Academy Awards. And there is always the possibility that you will be “discovered” by someone big in the entertainment industry… the first step in having your own name in a star on the Walk of Fame. So put on your sunglasses and “be cool.”
Washington D.C. – Join the many that experience our nation’s capitol with a walk from the White House to the Capitol and back along the National Mall lined with it many museums and emotional memorials. Along this route you’ll pass by the nation’s Treasury Building, the National Archives, Botanic Gardens, and several of the Smithsonian museums. Pop into the Museum of History for a view of the Hope Diamond, one of the largest in the world. Or spend a few touching moments in the World War II Memorial honoring the nearly half million men and women who sacrificed their lives dying in battle. This is a walk that you’ll remember for a lifetime.
