On November 10th 2020, the United States Marine Corps celebrates a milestone in its history. Founded in 1775, this year marks the 245th Birthday of the Corps. And yes, there is a cake as there is every year, but this year DOVID-19 prevents celebrating with the customary Birthday Ball. So the tradition of the cake this year is virtual. SelfTour™ Adventure Apps,
proudly features the Marine’s Memorial on its Drive Washington DC App, adds its congratulations to this historic and distinguished fighting force.
A Proud History
Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is regarded at the birthplace of the Corps because it was the location of the first Marines to enlist during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, with England no longer defending American shipping, the Marines fought against the Barbary pirates of North Africa. Thus the words in the Marine’s Official Hymn, “From the Halls of Montezuma (Mexico) to the Shores of Tripoli (North Africa).” Since then, Marines have participated in all the wars of the United States and in most cases were the first soldiers to fight. Currently the Marines stand ready to launch major military operations anywhere in the world on two weeks’ notice.
The Marine’s Memorial
The must-visit US Marine Corps War Memorial is located in Arlington on a hill overlooking the Potomac and the National Mall in Washington DC. The centerpiece is a colossal sculpture group based on the famous news photograph depicting six Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the small South Pacific island of Iwo Jima in World War II. Over 7,000 Marines and 20,000 Japanese soldiers were killed the fighting on that island. The narration on SelfTour’s App, effectively describes this event, underscored with the Marine’s Hymn, to create a moving emotional experience for those on this SelfTour. Take a trip to Washington and personally enjoy this Memorial.
Congrats to all Marines!
